Dealing With Distractions

Does eliminating distractions really help you dealing with them? Following the guidelines in The Now Habit, I’m not sure. I work with a timer, set at 30 minutes, taking a few minutes break between each dash, no matter how much in a flow I am when the timer chimes. I have IM up, my RSS reader, my Mail app (but with automatic checking turned off), my web browser, etc. Working against the timer helps me notice when I fall for distractions. I also keep a list of things that have distracted me, and whenever I fall for a new distraction, I note it down.

The above was posted to my personal weblog on November 29, 2005. My name is Peter Lindberg and I am a thirtysomething software developer and dad living in Stockholm, Sweden. Here, you’ll find posts in English and Swedish about whatever happens to interest me for the moment.
