About modeling in software development. Perhaps the emphasis is wrong? Whereas in other creative disciplines, the early stages of a project sees a lot of sketches of various kinds, quick and dirty cardboard prototypes, etc., perhaps software development proceeds too quickly into modeling. Modeling as producing construction plans, which need to be complete. It’s not exploration. There’s no distinction between modeling as sketching and modeling as producing plans. Does modeling as sketching even happen to any significant extent?

The above was posted to my personal weblog on October 28, 2005. My name is Peter Lindberg and I am a thirtysomething software developer and dad living in Stockholm, Sweden. Here, you’ll find posts in English and Swedish about whatever happens to interest me for the moment.
