Phenotropics, or Phenotropic Computing

A year ago today, I read an interview with Jaron Lanier, in which he mentioned “phenotropics,” or “phenotropic computing.” Essentially, he questioned the idea of “protocol adherence” in software development. (Found via Matt Webb.)

I didn’t remember this, so I googled around a little. I couldn’t find anything recent, but there were a couple of links to essays and other interviews on Lanier’s website (scroll down to “Questioning the centrality of protocols in software…”).

The above was posted to my personal weblog on February 9, 2005. My name is Peter Lindberg and I am a thirtysomething software developer and dad living in Stockholm, Sweden. Here, you’ll find posts in English and Swedish about whatever happens to interest me for the moment.
