David Gelernter on Beauty in Computing

David Gelernter, a computer scientist at Yale, perhaps put it best when he said, “Beauty is more important in computing than anywhere else in technology because software is so complicated. Beauty is the ultimate defence against complexity.”

Quoted in the Economist article “Unix’s founding fathers” (via Dan Hill). The source of the quote isn’t given in the article, but it appears to be from his book Machine Beauty: Elegance and the Heart of Technology.

The above was posted to my personal weblog on July 20, 2004. My name is Peter Lindberg and I am a thirtysomething software developer and dad living in Stockholm, Sweden. Here, you’ll find posts in English and Swedish about whatever happens to interest me for the moment.
