I’ve been looking into the plans for a new neighborhood that is being built in Stockholm. What’s interesting is that it’s actually a neighborhood, with shops and restaurants, and not only a group of apartment buildings. It’s as if it’s based on the ideas of Jane Jacobs.
The site is on a waterfront of a small island, and there are promenades along the water, with lots of places to sit down. And with shops, cafés, and restaurants here and there, there will probably be quite much pedestrian traffic.
One would expect that the apartments would all be big, expensive ones, but in fact half the apartments in the part of the neighborhood that I’ve been reading about (80 of 159) are quite small and not that expensive. There are older buildings on the rest of the island, so it seems that the area will be quite diverse, both in the regard of a mix of old and new buildings and different income groups.
It’ll be very interesting to see what effects this neighborhood has on the island. (In case you’re interested and know Swedish, you can get more information here.)
