Steven Holl quotes #2

There weren’t as much as I anticipated to quote from Phenomena and Idea, but here’s the closing words from the article:

When the intellectual realm, the realm of ideas, is in balance with the experiential realm, the realm of phenomena, form is animated with meaning. In this balance, architecture has both intellectual and physical intensity, with the potential to touch mind, eye, and soul.

I wonder whether the fact that essays by architects often are very abstract and fuzzy, is due to them being artists and having to work in very formal settings, with contracts and negotiations between clients, contractors, etc. I’m not sure I follow Holl in this essay, but I enjoyed reading it. It reminded me of the things I have read by Rem Koolhaas.
