Speed reading (cont’d)

(Continuing yesterday’s post.) I have briefly tried speed reading today and it immediately felt right. I use my index finger to set the pace, zigzagging it across the page, under the line I’m currently reading. My first observation is that there’s much less friction in my reading. I guess I’m a slow reader and I must make an effort to keep focused – which according to Niklas (in Swedish) is because the brain gets bored with the low input rate.

I also realized I often read aloud inside my head, which is a hindrance to reading faster. It shouldn’t be that hard to stop with. Another important thing Niklas writes is about to familiarize with the structure of the book prior to reading it: studying the table of contents, leafing through the book – and also to think about what questions you expect the book to answer.

The above was posted to my personal weblog on November 13, 2002. My name is Peter Lindberg and I am a thirtysomething software developer and dad living in Stockholm, Sweden. Here, you’ll find posts in English and Swedish about whatever happens to interest me for the moment.
