A quiz that won’t hit Daypop

In the blog world, these ubiquitous quizzes are very popular. Each time a new one appears, it climbs the Daypop Top 40. The Disposable Planet Quiz probably won’t. It’s not as fun as being told by some Perl script that you’re this or that cartoon character.

My score for the quiz is: “If everyone lived like you, we would need 1.7 planets.” My total footprint is 3.1 global hectares compared to the average footprint in Sweden of 6.7. This figure is so low because I don’t drive a car, I primarily eat vegetarian food (fish one or two times a month) and I’m fortunate enough to be able to walk to work. If my next project will be at a company farther from where I live, I’ll have to commute and my totals will go up.

In order to get “1.0 planets”, it seems you’ll have to be a vegan only eating locally produced food, walking/cycling/riding a horse everywhere you go and installing energy conservation.

Taking this quiz I came to think of how globalization is incompatible with sustainable development. Currently in Johannesburg, the World Summit on Sustainable Development is being held. The dailysummit.net weblog reports, with numerous updates every day. Seeing things like this happening in the blog world really makes me believe that good things might come out of this.

The above was posted to my personal weblog on August 27, 2002. My name is Peter Lindberg and I am a thirtysomething software developer and dad living in Stockholm, Sweden. Here, you’ll find posts in English and Swedish about whatever happens to interest me for the moment.
