Macro in digital cameras

One thing I find to be strange, is that some digital cameras are extraordinary when it comes to taking photos very closely, while some can’t handle subjects closer than 20 centimeters. Check out the snapshot I took yesterday. I took it with Oops’ DV-camera, a Sony DCR-PC110E at few centimeters distance. That camera allows for extreme closeups. If you get too close, the light is shut out, but otherwise, I feel that you could sneak the lens up a few millimeters from your subject.

I have played with still-only digital cameras that had this “extreme macro” capability, as well as with ones that couldn’t focus when closer than 20 cm. I’m thinking of getting myself a digital camera, and I want one that’s no bigger than my first-generation Canon IXUS (or ELPH) APS camera. I want at least 2.1 megapixels, but resolution is not that important to me. And I want extreme macro capability. I wonder which one has all that.
