Elin Oxenhielm in Dagens Nyheter

Earlier tonight, Sweden’s largest daily, Dagens Nyheter, published an item (via Erik Stattin) on how Elin Oxenhielm’s article is now being questioned. They pride themselves that they were the only newspaper to report objections to her proof, by asking her in a short interview what she had to say about professor Torsten Ekedahl’s claim that her solution was based on unproven results.

In that interview (published ten days ago) she said that she could meet his criticism but that she hadn’t had time to talk to him. According to the new article, Ekedahl says she still hasn’t contacted him.

The article quotes the open letter from Yishao Zhou, advisor for Oxenhielm’s master’s thesis but, according to herself, not involved in Oxenhielm’s submission to Nonlinear Analysis. Furthermore, the article says that several mathematicians have requested that the journal should withdraw the article from submission, and that the question is being investigated of how the article could pass the peer review process.

So far, Norwegian Aftenposten (in English) and Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet have reported about the criticism of Oxenhielm’s paper, but both are careful to balance the criticism with statements from Oxenhielm about how this is due to prestige. The article in Dagens Nyheter, however, seems confident that Ekedahl and Grigori Rozenblioum are right about Oxenhielm’s paper, and that this now is a question of how Oxenhielm’s paper could get accepted for publication.

Also today, there was an article on this in Göteborgsposten (not online, but I received a scan of it via email) which doesn’t mention the criticism at all. I haven’t had time to read it yet, so I can’t say that much. Also, I think there was something about this on Swedish public-service radio’s science news recently, but I don’t know which day. I’ll have to look that up as well.

(The article doesn’t mention the discussion at unstruct.org or my weblog, but I’m sure they must have read either of them.)
