Quick note on nuances in early speech: Although my daughter mostly uses one-syllable words (for words that are multi-syllable, she picks the dominant syllable and uses that: banana = ba, cat = ka, lamp (lampa in Swedish) = pa, and so on), if you listen carefully, you can distinguish the words by subtle differences in pronunciation.
Of course the context is very important for understanding what she says, as words such as “ba,” “pa,” “da,” etc., are used for so many different things. But when the context is of no help, you realize that despite her language being so rudimentary, it has a stunning level of detail.
